Join us in co-creating a framework to advance data-enabled sustainability goals on a global scale.

The ‘Data-Enabled Sustainability’ initiative aims to co-create actionable knowledge to aid data leaders in advancing organisational sustainability goals, delivering value for their enterprise and society.

At Data Leaders, we have witnessed the fast-changing leadership role of Chief Data and Analytics Officers (CDAOs). From a foundational data services role, CDAOs are increasingly adopting a strategic approach, creating a direct impact on customers, competitiveness, and shareholder value.

Considering this cross-functional business focus of CDAOs and the new set of legally binding regulations on ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) reporting, Data Leaders is launching an initiative to co-create a ‘Data-Enabled Sustainability Framework’. By integrating enterprise-grade data practices into the realm of sustainability, the initiative aims to advance data-enabled sustainability goals on a global scale.

Going beyond the confines of climate change and carbon reduction, we are looking at how data at scale enables the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), encompassing a diverse spectrum of environmental, social, and economic aspects.

In this initiative, CDAOs are positioned as catalysts for change, tasked with aligning data-driven insights with the overarching strategic objectives of their organisations. By forging synergies with other executive-level stakeholders, such as Chief Sustainability Officers and Chief Financial Officers, CDAOs must orchestrate a harmonious convergence of data prowess and sustainability targets.

Following the fruitful discussions that took place at Data Leaders think tank Guild 2022 and 2023, Data Leaders will promote a set of events and activities around the topic of co-creating the Data-Enabled Sustainability Framework.

In February 2024, we delivered a peer discussion as part of the initiative. The session had three main objectives:

  1. Harnessing the collective wisdom of data leaders to enable tangible actions that can be tailored to the specific needs of participating organisations;
  2. Supporting the role of CDAOs as a cross-functional executive enabling sustainability change within their organisations; and
  3. Creating a coalition of CDAOs, united by a common purpose and committed to co-creating best practices across industries, shifting the needle towards enterprise-grade data-driven approach to sustainability.

Moving forward, the task of co-creating this emerging framework calls for collective action and collaboration among organisations committed to advancing sustainability goals.

By pooling resources, expertise, and insights, this cross-organisational collaboration can catalyse innovation, enabling CDAOs to deliver tangible value supporting their organisations in achieving their sustainability targets.

The co-creation of the framework will continue in upcoming sessions and at Guild 2024.
